Item description: * See scan - perfect and stunning condition for this France Prussia / Franco Prussian War EK Eisernes Kreuz / Iron Cross 1st Cl. set. This is an exceptional Imperial Germany / Royal Prussian State order of the Iron Cross 1st Class with original case of issue, as well as scarce cardboard case wrapper as awarded by the Imperial Prussian order Committee. The Iron Cross 1st Class is nice multipiece silver and iron core one with genuine patination, marked at reverse by manufacturer with maker's mark J. WAGNER & S. 14 LOTH (J.Wagner&Sohn). Everything is in perfect condition with 99% of original black paint intact only showing couple of tiny bubbles at 2-3 places, but otherwise superb. Cros has original pin suspension and measures 43mm x 43mm and weighs exactly 15.8 grams. The leather box / case of the order is also in an intact quality with superb dark purple velvet base for the order / cross and white satin inside of the lid. Top of the case lid has a nice printed cross in gold. Scarcest of all is the original cardboard / light brown paper case for the case of the order with special inscribed text in German - EISERNES KREUZ - 1. Klasse - NUR VON DEM BELIEHENEN ZU OFFNEN giving instruction that this case should be opened only during the award decoration and presentation ceremony. There is also an Imperial like red seal sticker with round text reading KGL. PREUSS. GENERALORDENSKOM. most likely meaning the seal of the Imperial / Royal Prussian Supreme Order Committee. The leather case of the Iron Cross measures 65mm x 65mm and the cardboard one is 70mm x 73mm. On July 19, 1870 the Iron Cross was instituted, but no orders were issued until after the end of the war. The 1870 Iron Cross was altered to commemorate the recent victory over France. The original order face, with the 1813 date was retained, but it became the reverse side for the 2nd Class and the front of the 1870 order on all classes had a crown in the upper arm, the Royal Cipher "W" in the center, and 1870 in the lower arm. The Grand Cross was awarded to nine individuals in 1870, including one for Kaiser Wilhelm I. The Star to the Grand Cross of 1870 was not issued. The 1st Class of the Iron Cross was awarded only to about 1900 officers and so far this is one of the finest examples and full sets of this highest decoration we've seen for sale. Absolutely scarce and important military / militaria collector piece and one of the rarest Prussian and German orders and EKI Iron Crosses.
